Members of the Oneida Indian Nation community will gather Thursday, March 26 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Three Sisters Dinner. The event is sponsored by the Oneida Indian Nation Health Services Diabetes Program and will be held at the Shenendoah Clubhouse at Turning Stone Resort Casino. The Three Sisters Dinner celebrates the Sustainers of Life – corn, beans, and squash – and is often seen as the first sign of spring.
The Nation’s Health Services center has been an integral part of the Oneida Indian Nation’s mission to provide Members with the best in physical and mental health care. Among the department’s top concentrations are diabetes awareness, prevention and management due to the high incidence of the disease in Indian country. From screening patients and hosting events, from distributing dietary guidelines and hosting valuable seminars focusing on self-care, the department takes a very aggressive approach in addressing the health needs of all generations.
The Three Sisters Dinner is also held in March to observe National Nutrition Month®, an annual nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The 2020 education campaign theme is Eat Right, Bite By Bite.
The dinner is open to Oneida Indian Nation Members, Children of Enrolled Oneidas and Oneida Indian Nation Health Services clients of all ages. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served after the Thanksgiving Address, at approximately 6:15 p.m. A social dance will close the evening. Dinner reservations are required by March 19.
